Reach Stacker Tyres Durban

Reach Stacker Tyres for Durban's Port and Container Depots

ForknTire supplies and fits reach stacker tyres and container handler tyres for the machines working Durban's port, container depots and logistics yards. We're 20 minutes from the harbour at 6 Schenk Rd, Pinetown, and we fit on site, because nobody is driving a laden reach stacker down the N2 to a tyre shop.

Durban handles more containers than any other port in South Africa. Behind the terminals sits a ring of depots, freight yards and empty container parks in Bayhead, Clairwood, Mobeni, Prospecton and Jacobs, all running reach stackers and empty handlers hard, often around the clock. Those machines go through tyres. We'd like to be the people who replace them.

Why reach stacker tyres wear so fast

A loaded reach stacker can be carrying a container of 40 tonnes or more, with most of that weight sitting on the front axle. Then it turns on the spot, on concrete, hundreds of times a shift.

That combination does three things to tyres:

Heavy front axle loading

that punishes any tyre with too low a ply rating

Scrubbing from tight turns

which strips tread off the steer tyres quickly

Heat build-up

on long shifts with short breaks, which damages the casing long before the tread is gone

Choosing the right ply rating and keeping pressures correct makes a bigger difference to tyre life on a reach stacker than on almost any other machine we look after.

Reach Stacker Tyre Sizes We Supply

Most laden reach stackers run large bias or radial tyres on 25-inch rims. Common sizes include:

Machine typeCommon tyre sizesTypical ply rating
Laden reach stackers (front)18.00-25, 18.00R2536 PR to 40 PR
Laden reach stackers (rear, steer)18.00-2532 PR to 40 PR
Heavy laden container handlers18.00-33, 21.00-35High ply or star rated
Empty container handlers12.00-24, 14.00-24Varies by model
Port forklifts and heavy material handlers12.00-20, 14.00-24Varies by capacity

Always confirm against the sidewall or your machine's specification plate. Ply rating matters as much as size here. A tyre that fits the rim but is underrated for the load will fail early and can be dangerous.

Bias, radial or solid?

Bias Tyres

Bias reach stacker tyres are the most common choice in local depots. They're tough, handle the side loads of tight turning well and cost less to replace.

Radial Tyres

Radial tyres run cooler, which suits operations working long continuous shifts. They generally cost more upfront, and they make the most sense where heat, not cuts, is what's ending your tyres' lives.

Solid Tyres

Solid tyres show up on some port forklifts and smaller handlers working around scrap, debris and twist-lock offcuts. They don't suit every reach stacker, so check with us before switching.

Frequently asked questions about reach stacker tyres

What size tyres does a reach stacker use?

Most laden reach stackers use 18.00-25 tyres, usually rated at 36 to 40 ply. Heavier container handlers can use 18.00-33 or larger, and empty container handlers often run 12.00-24 or 14.00-24. Always check the sidewall or machine plate for your exact size.

It varies with hours worked, load, surface and driving style. Tight turning on concrete and underinflation shorten tyre life the most. Daily pressure checks and steady driving habits help them last noticeably longer.

Yes. We fit reach stacker tyres on site across Durban's port, depots and logistics yards, and at sites further inland by arrangement.

Yes, at minimum per axle. Mismatched tyres on a reach stacker carry the load unevenly, which affects stability and wears the newer tyre faster.

Yes. We supply tyres for empty container handlers from Kalmar, Hyster, SANY and other brands, commonly in 12.00-24 and 14.00-24 sizes.
