TLB Tyre Pressure: The Complete South African Guide for Operators

Most people only learn what their TLB tyres should be running at the day one blows on site. By then it’s already cost them a morning. Soft tyres cook themselves from the inside and split. Hard ones hammer the centre of the tread flat and let go of the ground every time the loader’s working a slope. Either way you’re buying rubber sooner than you needed to, and burning more diesel getting there. So here’s what we actually run, a chart to work off, and the kPa-to-psi sums that catch nearly everyone out.

These numbers aren’t off a chart someone scraped. We fit TLB, construction and industrial tyres all over South Africa, and this is what comes off the machines we put our hands on.

What is the correct TLB tyre pressure?

Front and rear don’t match, and that catches people out. On most machines you’re looking at 35 to 45 psi on the front steers and a fair bit less on the rears, somewhere around 25 to 35. Call the whole spread 170 to 310 kPa if you work in metric. But the sidewall and the manual override anything I tell you here, because load rating and size move the goalposts.

Think about how a TLB sits. Bucket out front, backhoe off the back, and the balance shifting the whole time you’re digging and slewing and trundling between holes. Two axles, two jobs, two pressures. Any operator who’s been at it a while checks both before the engine’s warm.

How do you check TLB tyre pressure correctly?

Cold. First thing, before the machine’s moved. That’s the only reading worth trusting, and here’s why: rubber heats up as it works and the pressure rises right along with it, so check it at smoko and the gauge lies to you. Looks fine, reads high, and you’ve quietly been running soft all week.

The routine:

  • Morning, cold, before a wheel turns.
  • Use a gauge you trust. The pencil ones wander and you’ll never know by how much.
  • Front and rear separately. They’re not on the same number.
  • You’re down there anyway, so eyeball the rubber for cuts, bulges, wear that’s gone lopsided.
  • Set it, then read it again.

Couple of minutes. That’s it. The blokes who skip it pay for it later in tyres and a machine parked when it should be earning.

Is there a TLB tyre pressure calculator?

Not really, no. Anyone selling you a magic number is guessing, because the right pressure leans on tyre size, load index, axle weight and the state of the ground. What does work is dull but reliable: take the manufacturer’s figure for your tyre size as the baseline, then move it inside the safe band to suit the load and the surface.

What is 240 tyre pressure in psi?

Call it 35 psi. That’s where 240 kPa lands, and it’s a number you’ll see often on TLB fronts and lighter commercial tyres. Manual says 240 kPa, gauge says 35, same thing.

What is the correct truck tyre pressure in psi?

Anywhere from about 30 psi on a light bakkie to 100 or 120 on a heavy hauler running full. It tracks the load rating, plain and simple. Load is what decides it, not the tyre size on its own, which is why a 3 tonne and an 8 tonne on the same rubber still end up at different pressures.

What is the right 3 tonne truck tyre pressure?

50 to 65 psi, and the load tells you where in that range to sit. Loaded, run it up near 65 to keep the sidewalls happy. Empty, drop it a touch. The ride improves and you stop wearing a stripe down the middle of the tread.

Why does correct TLB and truck tyre pressure matter?

More than people reckon. Safety for one. Then how long the tyre lasts, what the machine drinks, how it sits under load. Run soft and heat builds where you can’t see it, the sidewall gives up, and that’s behind a big chunk of the failures we get called out to. Run hard and the tyre’s barely touching the ground, so grip goes and the middle of the tread wears out in no time.

Get it right and the difference shows up where you’d want it to:
