The best forklift tyre brand for your operation depends on your shift intensity, your operating surface and how you think about cost per tyre vs cost per operating hour. Trelleborg and Solideal/Camso are the premium brands most often specified by forklift OEMs and by high-utilisation operations running two or three shifts. Advance and Mitas offer genuine quality at mid-range prices. NUVO Rhino is South Africa’s own locally developed solid tyre brand with a strong performance track record. Budget imports from various Asian manufacturers vary considerably in quality and are worth considering only for light-duty, one-shift operations where service life isn’t the primary concern.
We’ve supplied tyres from most of these brands since 2008, across applications from Durban’s port logistics operations to cold chain facilities, sugar cane handling and heavy manufacturing. What follows is an honest assessment of each, not a catalogue.
How to read this comparison
We’ve organised the main brands into three tiers based on price point and typical performance on South African applications. Within each tier there’s variation, and the right brand for a specific machine and application isn’t always the one at the top of the tier.
One consistent observation from 17 years in this market: the compound grade you select within a brand matters as much as the brand itself. A mid-tier product from a premium brand, run on the wrong application, will underperform a well-selected entry product from a mid-range brand every time. We’ll point these out as we go.
Premium tier: Trelleborg, Solideal/Camso
Trelleborg
Trelleborg is a Swedish manufacturer and one of the two brands most commonly specified as standard fitment by major forklift OEMs including Toyota Material Handling, Kion Group (Linde and Still) and Crown. Their solid resilient tyres, particularly the XP800 and XP1000 series, are well-regarded for multi-shift warehouse operations.
The performance characteristics that justify Trelleborg’s premium price are consistent compound quality, good heat dissipation on high-utilisation machines and a documented service life that tends to meet or exceed their published estimates on the applications they’re specified for. In KZN’s coastal environment, Trelleborg’s compound formulations hold up well against the ozone and humidity degradation that shortens the life of some competing products.
The main limitation with Trelleborg is price. For a one-shift operation doing light work in a clean warehouse, paying a Trelleborg price for a tyre that will see 600 operating hours a year is difficult to justify. Where Trelleborg makes financial sense is on multi-shift operations with high lift frequencies, operations running expensive machinery where tyre-related downtime is costly, and operations where OEM warranty conditions specify a particular brand.
We carry Trelleborg in the most common South African sizes. For less common sizes the lead time is longer than it would be for mid-range brands where local distributor stock is deeper.
Best for: Multi-shift, high-utilisation warehouse and DC operations; OEM-specified fitment; operations where total cost of ownership over 18+ months justifies the unit price.
Not ideal for: Light-duty one-shift operations; budget-constrained operations where a mid-tier product will do the same job for less.
Solideal / Camso
Solideal, now operating under the Camso brand (part of the Michelin Group), is the other premium brand with significant OEM backing and the most extensive range of solid tyre sizes available in South Africa. If Trelleborg doesn’t have your size, Solideal/Camso often does.
The Solideal range covers several compound grades from standard through to their Xtra compound for demanding applications. Their non-marking range is one of the broadest available for the South African market. The Michelin Group ownership gives Solideal/Camso the R&D backing of one of the world’s largest tyre manufacturers, and this shows in compound consistency.
On performance, Solideal/Camso’s premium grades are comparable to Trelleborg on most applications. The relative merits between the two brands depend more on specific size availability and local distributor stock levels than on a significant performance difference.
Best for: Operations requiring a wide size range from a single premium brand; non-marking applications where range and availability matter; operations that have standardised on Solideal across multiple machine types.
Mid-tier: Advance, Mitas, Maxam
Advance
Advance is a Chinese-manufactured brand that occupies a genuine mid-tier position: better compound quality and more consistent manufacturing than entry-level budget imports, at a price meaningfully below the European premium brands. For single-shift warehouse and DC operations in South Africa, Advance solid tyres represent reasonable value.
The important caveat with Advance, and with any Chinese-manufactured tyre brand, is that product quality is specific to the grade and series you’re buying. Advance’s upper-grade product is a solid mid-tier tyre. Their entry-level product is closer to a budget import. When you’re buying Advance, make sure you know which grade you’re getting and ask for the expected service life on your application.
On KZN’s coastal environment specifically, Advance’s mid-grade compounds show acceptable performance, though the surface cracking timeline is generally shorter than equivalent Trelleborg or Solideal products. For operations that do regular tyre inspections and replace on schedule rather than managing tyres to failure, this is a manageable characteristic.
Best for: One- to two-shift warehouse and DC operations where total cost of ownership is a priority but budget imports aren’t appropriate; operations that do regular tyre maintenance and inspections.
Mitas
Mitas is a Czech-manufactured brand with a strong agricultural and industrial tyre range. In South Africa, Mitas is probably better known in the agricultural tyre segment than in the forklift segment, but their industrial tyre range is worth knowing about for operations that want European manufacturing quality at a price below the top-tier brands.
For agricultural tyre applications in KZN (tractor tyres, implement tyres, harvester tyres), Mitas is a well-regarded choice at a price point that sits between budget imports and the Michelin or Trelleborg agricultural premium. For forklift applications, their range is more limited in the sizes most common on South African machines.
Best for: Agricultural tyre applications; operations that want European-made product at a step below premium pricing; KZN and Eastern Cape farming operations.
Maxam
Maxam is a Chinese-manufactured brand that has established a better reputation in South Africa than many budget imports through more consistent compound quality and better distribution support. Tirecity KZN, one of the region’s larger industrial tyre importers, holds significant Maxam stock.
Maxam sits at the upper end of the mid-tier range. Their solid forklift tyre performance on standard one-shift warehouse operations is generally acceptable. For demanding multi-shift or heavy-load applications, the premium brands are a better long-term cost decision.
Best for: Price-sensitive one-shift operations that still need a step up from entry-level budget product; operations comfortable managing replacement cycles on a mid-range compound.
South African brand: NUVO Rhino and NUVO Buffalo (Everest Material Handling)
NUVO is South Africa’s own solid forklift tyre brand, developed and manufactured for South African conditions by Everest Material Handling, who distribute nationally.
NUVO Rhino is the premium offering: a solid forklift tyre developed and tested in South African environments, including the coastal humidity conditions of KZN and the temperature extremes of the Highveld. The “developed for African conditions” positioning isn’t just marketing. South African operating environments genuinely differ from European or Asian markets in ways that affect compound performance, and having a locally-developed tyre that’s been tested here rather than adapted from a Northern Hemisphere specification is a real advantage for some applications.
NUVO Buffalo is the more recently released, price-competitive option within the same family: competitive on price with mid-range imports but with the same SA-specific design philosophy.
We don’t carry NUVO directly (Everest Material Handling is their exclusive distributor) but we’re familiar with the brand and happy to provide an honest view on where it fits relative to what we stock. For operations looking for SA-manufactured product or for operations in environments where the local-conditions argument is most relevant (particularly KZN coastal), NUVO Rhino is worth comparing.
Budget imports: entry-level Asian brands
There’s a category of forklift tyre available in South Africa from various distributors at prices significantly below even the mid-tier brands above. These are entry-level products, typically manufactured in China, that vary considerably in quality between manufacturers and even between production runs from the same manufacturer.
We’re direct about this: we don’t stock entry-level budget imports because we don’t believe they represent good value for most of our customers. The service life gap between an entry-level budget import and a mid-tier product is larger than the price gap on most applications. An entry-level tyre at R1,800 that delivers 900 hours of service costs more per operating hour than a mid-tier tyre at R2,800 that delivers 2,200 hours. That’s before factoring in the additional fitment cost and downtime for the extra replacement cycle.
There is a legitimate use case: very light duty, low-utilisation machines where service life is secondary to absolute upfront cost. If you have a forklift that does 200 hours a year moving stock around a small storage yard, an entry-level tyre may be entirely appropriate. If you have a machine running 1,500 hours a year in a busy distribution centre, it’s not.
If a supplier is quoting you significantly below the price ranges in this guide, ask what brand and grade you’re being quoted before you compare it to anything else.
How South African conditions should shape your brand choice
South Africa’s industrial geography creates distinct tyre performance conditions that should inform the brand and compound you select.
KZN coastal (Durban, Richards Bay, KZN south coast): High humidity, salt air exposure and UV intensity accelerate surface oxidation and compound ageing on all tyre types. Premium compound brands with higher ozone resistance hold up better here. Solid tyre surface cracking appears earlier in KZN coastal environments than in drier inland conditions on the same compound. If you’re in Durban and you’re seeing tyres crack before they wear out, compound grade and compound chemistry are worth examining.
Highveld (Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni, Pretoria): Large temperature swings between cold winter mornings and hot summer afternoons put different stress on tyre compounds than the more consistent KZN coastal temperature profile. Pneumatic tyres are more susceptible to this cycling than solid tyres. Premium solid compound brands that are designed for wide temperature ranges perform better here than compounds optimised for a narrower temperature band.
Northern KZN and Mpumalanga mining and forestry: Abrasive ground conditions and heavy loading are the dominant factors. Compound hardness and abrasion resistance are more important than other properties. Premium brands’ harder compound grades are usually the right call on these applications.
Agricultural KZN (sugar cane, macadamia, subtropical farming): Cut crop debris, wet and soft ground, and the specific demands of agricultural equipment make pneumatic compound selection important. Mitas and NUVO’s agricultural range, as well as the major agricultural tyre brands (Michelin, Alliance, BKT, Continental), are more appropriate for this segment than general industrial forklift tyre brands.

The honest version of the recommendation depends on your operation:
If you’re running multiple shifts a day on a busy machine in a Durban warehouse or DC: Trelleborg or Solideal/Camso. The service life difference from a premium brand justifies the unit price within 12 to 18 months on most operations at this utilisation level.
If you’re running one shift a day in a standard warehouse operation: a well-specified Advance mid-grade product or equivalent is usually the right balance of price and performance.
If your machine is light-duty and low-utilisation: we’ll tell you if an entry-level option makes sense, or if a mid-tier tyre is still the right call. We’d rather give you the right advice than oversell you.
Frequently asked questions
Is Trelleborg or Solideal/Camso better for South African conditions? Performance is comparable on most standard warehouse and DC applications. The more useful question is availability in your specific size: one brand sometimes has better local stock in a less common size than the other. Call us with your size and we’ll tell you what’s in stock and what the lead time is on each.
Are there good South African-made forklift tyres? NUVO (by Everest Material Handling) is the only domestically developed solid forklift tyre brand we’re aware of in South Africa. The Rhino range has been positively received and the SA-conditions design philosophy is a genuine point of difference. They’re worth comparing for operations in environments where that local specification matters.
Why are some forklift tyre brands so much cheaper than others? Manufacturing quality, compound formulation and rubber density vary significantly across brands and manufacturers. A price that looks like a good deal on a per-tyre basis may not be a good deal on a per-operating-hour basis once you factor in service life and the cost of replacement cycles. Ask your supplier what service life they’d expect from the specific product on your application before you compare prices.

Can I mix brands across the same machine? For most operations this is fine, provided the compound grade is matched closely enough between the two brands. You wouldn’t want to run a premium compound tyre on one front position and a budget entry-level tyre on the other: the handling characteristics differ enough to create a measurable imbalance. We’ll flag this if it’s a concern when you order.
